Photos from Google event in Lagos

By 2034 Africa is expected to have the world’s largest working-age population of 1.1 billion—yet only 3 to 4 million jobs are created annually. That means there’s an urgent need to create opportunities for the millions of people on the continent who are creative, smart and driven to succeed. The internet, and technology as a whole, offer great opportunities for creating jobs, growing businesses and boosting economies. But people need the right skills, tools and products to navigate the digital world and to make it work for them, their businesses and their communities. At a Google event recently held in Lagos, the firm announced progress they’ve made in products and features for users in Nigeria, including YouTube, Search and Maps. They also announced initiatives focused on digital skills training, education and economic opportunity, and support for African startups and developers.

Google

Digital Skills for Africa

Last year we set out to help bridge the digital skills gap in Africa when we pledged to train one million young people in the region—and we’ve exceeded this target. Through either in-person or online trainings, we help people learn to build a web presence, use Search to find jobs, get tips to enhance their CV, use social media, and so on. Now we’re expanding this program, and committing to prepare another 10 million people for jobs of the future in the next five years. We’ll also be providing mobile developer training to 100,000 Africans to develop world-class apps, with an initial focus on Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa.

Google

Google.org grants

Our charitable arm, Google.org, is committing $20 million over the next five years to nonprofits that are working to improve lives across Africa. We’re giving $2.5 million in initial grants to the nonprofit arms of African startups Gidi Mobile and Siyavula to provide free access to learning for 400,000 low-income students in South Africa and Nigeria. The grantees will also develop new digital learning materials that will be free for anyone to use.

We also want to invite nonprofits from across the continent to share their ideas for how they could impact their community and beyond. So we’re launching a Google.org Impact Challenge in Africa in 2018 to award $5 million in grants. Any eligible nonprofit in Africa can apply, and anyone will be able to help select the best ideas by voting online.

Google

Launchpad Accelerator Africa

We want to do more to support African entrepreneurs in building successful technology companies and products. Based on our global Launchpad Accelerator program, this initiative will provide more than $3 million in equity-free funding, mentorship, working space and access to expert advisers to more than 60 African startups over three years. Intensive three-month programs, held twice per year, will run out of a new Google Launchpad Space in Lagos—the program’s first location outside of the United States.

Making our products work better in Africa

For people to take advantage of digital opportunities, acquiring the right skills and tools is only part of the equation. Online products and services—including ours—also need to work better in Africa. Today, we’re sharing news about how we’re making YouTube, Search and Maps more useful and relevant for Nigerian users.

google

YouTube Go

Designed from the ground up, YouTube Go lets you discover, save and share videos you love in a way that’s transparent about the size of downloads. Designed to be “offline” first, the app improves the experience of watching videos on a slower network and gives control over the amount of data used streaming or saving videos. It’s a full YouTube experience, with fresh and relevant video recommendations tailored to your preferences and the ability to share videos quickly and easily with friends nearby.  In June, Nigeria became the second country where we started actively testing YouTube Go. Later this year, we’ll be expanding this to a beta launch of the app, available to all Nigerian users.

google

Lagos now on Street View in Google Maps

In the last few months, we’ve improved our address search experience in Lagos, by adding thousands of new addresses and streets, outlines of more than a million buildings in commercial and residential areas, and more than 100,000 additional Nigerian small businesses on Google Maps. Today we’re launching Lagos on Street View, with 10,000 kilometers of imagery, including the most important historic roads in the city. You can virtually drive along the Carter Bridge to the National Stadium or across the Eko Bridge, down to the Marina—all on your smartphone.

Faster web results

When you’re on a 2G-like connection or using a low storage device, pages can take a long time to load. We previously launched a feature that streamlines search results so they load with less data and at high speed.  Today we’re extending that feature to streamline websites you reach from search results, so that they load with 90 percent less data and five times faster, even on low storage devices.

More local information in Search

We’ve also made several updates to Search to bring more useful, relevant answers and information to people in Nigeria:

  • Knowledge Panels: We’re connecting people with easy access to the answers to things they care about, displaying knowledge cards for everything from local football teams to Nigerian musicians and actors.
  • Health Cards: Later this year we’ll launch more than 800 knowledge cards detailing common symptoms and treatments for the most prevalent health conditions in Nigeria. We’ve partnered with the University of Ibadan to ensure that answers have been reviewed by Nigerian doctors for local relevance and accuracy. Nigeria is one of the first countries where we’re providing locally tailored health answers on Search.
  • Posts on Google: Posts makes it possible for musicians, entertainers and other public figures to share updates, images and videos directly on Google, for people to see while they explore on the web. Nigeria is the third country where we’ve made this feature available and some of the country’s popular musicians are already using it.

google

The things we’re announcing today are what drive us—building platforms and products that are relevant and useful for billions, not just the few, and helping people to succeed in the digital economy. That’s why we hope to equip more people, in Africa and elsewhere, with digital skills and tools. We’re excited to be part of Africa’s evolving digital story.

Young graduate teacher gets N1.5Million list of items from prospective Benue in-laws

Coming after a Benue Monarch banned intending grooms in his community, from spending more than N100, 000 on traditional wedding, a young graduate who teaches in a private secondary school has fallen victim of the ‘overblown’ marriage list.

According to Idoma Voice, the teacher who earns a monthly salary of N75,000 was asked by his prospective Benue in-laws to bring five jerry cans of palm oil, one goat, two cartons of beer, two crates of soft drinks and eight thousand naira before he would be given the list of items to buy and pay for.

He went, presented the items to them and they gave him a list of more items worth N1.5M.

“This excludes other logistic and miscellaneous expenses he may incur during the traditional marriage. We are even yet to talk about Church wedding which some ladies insist on before stepping their feet in a man’s house. Even the guy’s entire salary for thirty months cannot foot the bills before him. They must continue with their life after marriage. Funny enough, this lady is a student. he wrote.

He continued;

“I deliberately refused to mention the name of the man, lady and families involved because it is not really about them. It is about us. We have to condemn such developments in Tiv land. You may say “or maa wan na ior mbera ga”. But life is a circle. Today it is that poor young man. Tomorrow, it will definitely not be him. “Shin kem gema been ken tar Tiv ase”? Shi mde ve.”

Tributes pour in for beautiful Unizik graduate who died from Malaria

Tributes are pouring in for Sochima Amanda Iloka, who succumbed to Malaria Yesterday!

The graduate of  Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka popularly known as ‘Soch Money’ reportedly died yesterday after a brief illness.

A tribute on her page read;

“RIP SENIOR SOCHIMA ILLOKA, a.k.a SOCH MONEY
She was my senior in secondary school then, she left this world yesterday after a brief illness (Malaria), MAY YOUR SOUL REST IN PEACE AMEN.

It is really a sad news that a young lady with a bright future like her died but the truth is that no one can reject death, I have been thinking about her demise since yesterday, I was saying that “she is too young to die”, then I remembered that there are some people that are more younger than her that are no more.

This is just to remind us that we are on a journey in this world, no matter what we are doing on earth, let us keep in mind that no one knows his or her date of death, some people would be wondering how an ordinary malaria can kill someone, my dear, if God says it’s over, an ordinary sneeze can take you away, her death really touched me and it shows that we are nothing on this earth, we are dust and we shall return to where we belong, only the spirit will go for judgment.

Let us not relent in being careful the way we live our life, everyday is not Christmas, one day you might wake up and see your body lying on the bed and you can’t go back to it, death is a respecter of no one, if you like be rich, poor, beautiful, ugly, it doesn’t matter, what matters is where we would spend our life eternally.

BE CAREFUL HOW YOU LIVE YOUR LIFE! NO ONE KNOWS WHAT WILL HAPPEN IN THE NEXT SECOND!! REST IN PEACE DEAR SOCH…None expected it so soon.

Some photos of her!

Financial Literacy for Millennials

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Millennials? Young striving individuals between the ages of 18 and 32, who the media loves to paint as “fast paced”, “tech-driven”, “adventurous”, “risk takers,” and “thrill seekers.” They are also the ones who make up the greater percentage of the current economic workforce, but when it comes to financial literacy, Millennials may need to learn a thing or two.

Financial Literacy for Millennials

Millennials are notorious for brief attention spans, impulsive spends and mostly do not think long-term about their financial future. In fact, there is evidence that emotions and biases play a large part in Millennials’ financial decisions.

In Nigeria, we Millennials grew up as witnesses to one of the most turbulent financial uncertainties in our country’s history. With the financial crisis since the 2000’s leading to a recession, many of us have watched our parents struggle with financial insecurity and worry about whether they’ll ever be able to retire. Many recent graduates have experienced unemployment as a result of the crisis, and many are burdened with significant debts, trying to get by; surely these are not good times.

These experiences during the impressionable years have led many Millennials to take an emotionally driven approach and adopt unsavoury money habits that deter financial success. This makes it more imperative for us to explore avenues to manage our finances and ensure we can have enough for now and for the future.

So, how can you as a Millennial, prone to a bleak financial future, ensure a turnaround into the prospects of present and future financial success? A few ideas for you;

  • 1. Learn Financial Management

Financial Literacy for Millennials 2

As a Millennial, you’re a part of the largest percentage of the workforce, and as such, earn from your labour which keeps you afloat financially. With that in mind, it’s important to zero in on the value of acquiring practical financial management skills and overall financial literacy to help manage the funds you amass.

Of course, all of this may prove overwhelming — which is pretty likely except you have a Ph.D. in Economics and you’ve got the space of time to devote to manage your expenditure — but financial advisors are more than happy to guide you through the choices, for a fee or better still, there’s an app for that.

  • 2. Start Saving and Investing

Financial Literacy for Millennials 3

This isn’t rocket science, It’s really simple; if you want to be successful, you do not have to only save for the rainy day, but also be prepared to make valid and trusted investments. Saving early and often is the key to long-term financial security. There might be heartache in the day-to-day, but in the long run, you’ll be glad you stuck it out.

Financial Literacy for Millennials 4

To most Millennials, retirement planning might sound like an oxymoron, especially since more attention is spent on “the now” rather than “the future”. If you’re a Millennial, having a retirement savings or pensions plan can be particularly good for you.

With a paying job now, you as well as your employer are compelled by law in Nigeria to contribute a token sum off your salary and throughout your career. Starting early enables you amass a sizeable fund before the decades when you do need the money; saving for the future has become easy.

  • 4. There’s An APP For That

Financial Literacy for Millennials 5

Millennials are all, or almost all, “digital natives”, meaning that they have been raised in homes that had computers, the internet, and cell phones. To a very high degree, this upbringing has probably influenced how you prefer to make decisions, receive information, and interact with people.

So it is no surprise that with technology at your fingertips through your smartphone, there are options and services available for financial planning in the form of Mobile Apps. Some of which are popular with fellow millennials, just ask around or check your app store.

  • 5. Don’t Forget Insurance

Financial Literacy for Millennials 6

While this is not the most popular or widely understood economic tool, insurance can be the foundation of a solid financial plan. Insurance is typically the last thing most Millennials focus on.

As one, you’re probably more concerned with budgeting and paying off debts, but if you have people dependent on your income or have property of value, know that not having insurance can derail everything.

It’s the safety net that should come first, not last, and the good news is, buying insurance has never been this easy. You can buy virtually any kind of insurance today from Life, Health, Car, House, e.t.c online.

In the end, achieving financial success comes down to getting a few important things right: saving and investing on a regular basis, getting better literacy to managing your funds, resisting the temptation to make exuberant expenditures that you cannot outrightly afford and being careful about whom you entrust your money with.

Truth is, there are no guarantees in the financial world, but if you get the basics right, you would do just fine.

This article is provided by compareinsurance.com.ng, the online insurance portal for buying insurance from Nigeria’s most serious insurers in 3 simple steps…
