Video from the public transport shows people sitting down without looking first, only to leap up again when they felt something unexpected between their legs.
It is reserved for men only, leading some to claim the move is sexist.
However, it was actually put there as part of a campaign against sexual harassment
Mexico City Metro went viral with their stunt, which is meant to illustrate that people have a right to go about their journey without being confronted by sexual comments or people trying to grope them.
Men who sit down on the seat immediately feel uncomfortable.
But a sign next to it reads: ‘It’s uncomfortable to sit here but it doesn’t compare with the sexual violence that women suffer in their everyday lives.’
The video ends with the statistic: ‘9 out of 10 women in Mexico City have been victims of some form of sexual violence.’
